District Planning New 8/9 Buildilng
At the September 13th meeting of the Waukee Board of Education the Board took action approving the construction of an 8/9 building planned to open for the 2014-15 school year, and directed administration to begin the planning and design process which would return the district to the PK-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12 configuration effective that year. From the time we first opened Prairieview, each subsequent facility committee has reinforced our community’s desire for that type of building configuration. The last facility committee recommended building a third 6-8 facility that could eventually be changed to an 8/9 building at the appropriate time. As we continued to monitor our enrollment projections, as well as staffing needs, it became very apparent that it would be best to do that now rather than later.
The intent is to model this facility after South Middle School (SMS), with necessary tweaking and changes appropriate for an 8/9 facility, and to build it on the land the district recently purchased just south and west of SMS.
We will begin the design process later this fall and start to ask appropriate staff members for input as we move forward. Eric Rose, Chief Operating Officer for the district, will be taking the lead role in this working directly with our staff and architects.
This also means that in the fall of 2014 Prairieview School will return to an 8/9 facility. Beginning that fall we will have SMS as a 6-7 building, WMS as a 6-7 building, PV as an 8/9 building and the yet to be named and built facility as an 8/9 building. These are all positive changes as we continue to grow and work to best serve and meet the educational needs of our students.
