Fine Arts Day 2012
Waukee Elementary’s Fine Arts Day, sponsored by Waukee Elementary PTO, was held April 30. Students were able to experience a wide array of cultural and artistic learning. Stations for the day included:
Stormy Mochal ~ Book Illustrator and Art Gallery Owner. Students learned of Ms. Mochal’s path to becoming an artist, along with how she creates her artwork. They also got the opportunity to work with oil pastels, Ms. Mochal’s medium of choice, on a project of their own.
Ruth Mwangangi~ African Storyteller. Kindergarten through 2nd grade students learned more about African culture from Ms. Mwangangi, who came to Iowa from Kenya. She shared with student how life for students in Kenya would be similar to life for a Waukee Elementary student and also how it would be different. She shared an interactive story with the students, allowing all to participate in the telling of the story with either instruments or sound effects.
University of Iowa Art Collection~ African Art and Graphic Novels. Student were able to see and hear about two different art collections from the University of Iowa. They learned more about the history and meanings behind African art pieces. Older students were able to hear more about graphic novels and how they are used to tell stories in a visual way.
Waukee Elementary Art Project~ All students were able to add to our PBIS handprint displays, which will be placed throughout the school. Mr. Bill Strack (Mrs. Tjaden’s dad), a high school art instructor from Pocohontas, was our guest artist in residence for the project.
Waukee Elementary students had a wonderful day and wish to give a big thank-you to the PTO for their generous support of this experience! Below are several pictures of our day:
