Today’s Weather Related Cancellation
The decision to delay or cancel school is never an easy one to make. Waukee began consulting with surrounding districts yesterday evening and again this morning around 4:30 a.m. The weather forecast for Thursday morning indicated the possibility of wind chills in excess of -25/-30 degrees with temperatures improving throughout the day. Because skin freezes in as little as 10 minutes at -30 wind chills, the decision was made to delay school. It is always our intention to notify parents of a cancellation no later than 7 a.m. However, today we had many complications that prevented this from happening. The extremely cold temperature affected our ability to communicate with our bus barn due to an internet connection in rural Dallas County. Parents would not have been able to communicate with Durham School Services this morning. In addition to this complication, we had 17 buses that would not start because fuel related issues. We are working with our fuel provider to pin-point and solve the problem. The safety of our students always comes first when making weather related decisions. With more than 4,000 students who ride buses on a daily basis, it was imperative that school was cancelled today. We understand and apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you and your family.
