2 Waukee High Teachers Receive Education Awards
Two Waukee High School (WHS) teachers recently received awards for their outstanding efforts in education. Michelle Hill was awarded the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Aspirations in Computing Educator Award and Tammy Getting was awarded the 2013 Leadership in Diversity Award from the Chinese Association of Iowa.
Michelle Hill, Business Teacher
The Educator Award is conferred upon educators that have demonstrated a commitment to encouraging young women’s aspirations in computing. Awardees are selected from among those that have endorsed and written recommendations for applicants for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing.
“It is an honor to work with so many outstanding students and colleagues each day. The award means that much more coming in part from the students. I am proud to be able to share all that Waukee does for our students with others,” Hill said.
Hill is the HyperStream Club sponsor at WHS. Hyperstream is a student organization sponsored by the Technology Association of Iowa. It gives students hands-on experience in advanced areas of technology in a myriad of career fields. One the group’s goals every year is to increase the number of young women participants. This year HyperStream Club had nearly a 28 percent increase in female participation.
Tammy Getting, World Language Teacher
The Leadership in Diversity Award recognizes individuals and organizations that demonstrate outstanding creativity, commitment and effectiveness in promoting diversity in the State of Iowa. As a major community organization, Chinese Association of Iowa believes that it is essential to identify and honor “role models” who can inspire all of us, especially the younger generation.
“I feel honored that I was recognized for Leadership in Diversity. It has been a wonderful learning experience for me to be involved with the Chinese Association of Iowa,” Getting said.
Getting strives to provide opportunities for WHS students in which they can expand their cultural awareness. For two years she has helped Chinese Association of Iowa plan and hold their Chinese New Year Celebration with the help of Waukee High School International Club involved. This year Allen and Celine Robles, WHS seniors, received Youth Leadership Awards at the Chinese New Year Celebration.
