Waukee Jazz I finished in second place in class 4A at the Iowa Jazz Championships!

Justin Page, Peter Dressel, Grant Whitaker and Trevor Else were recognized as outstanding soloists. Else was also recognized as one of only four “top soloists recognized” in Class 4A out of fifteen bands for the day.

“Jazz band has provided me with many opportunities and friends, and I am really going to miss Mr. Page, as he has had a huge impact on my life. I was shocked and honored that I was one of four to receive the prestigious award; it was cool to be recognized in front of my peers,” Else said.

Emma Georgeff was the only student recognized at the evening performance who received a scholarship to the Birch Creek Music Camp. “I honestly did not expect the scholarship award at all; I was so surprised!” Georgeff said.

Waukee played four selections: Pagan Pie composed by Chris Merz, Black Brown and Beautiful by Oliver Nelson, Chucho by Paquito D’Rivera and BeBop Charlie by Bob Florence.

The top two bands in each class performed in the finals. When it was announced that Waukee was in the finals, the directors went backstage and called a coin toss to determine who went first and last. For the first time, Jazz I Band Director Wayne Page called the toss correctly, allowing Waukee to performlast.

“The entire band was euphoric and quite honestly more excited about performing together one last time rather than worrying about getting first or second,” Wayne said.

Waukee Jazz I has placed in the top three in the state the last eight years. This year’s seniors placed first in 2012, second in 2013, third in 2014 and second again in 2015.

“This speaks volumes on the musicianship, dedication and support of these students’ endeavors. These students and this school system are amazing,” Wayne said.

“I am most appreciative of how playing in this band has opened my eyes to this wonderful genre of music. Participating in the jazz program inspired me to learn about its origin and evolution, as well as influential musicians that continue to inspire me. I have found myself not only consuming jazz music, but other genres of music that I might not have been interested in prior to my participation in this program. I am leaving Waukee with a more open mind and greater appreciation for music and art in general,” Georgeff said.
