Board Approves 2017-18 Calendar
On January 9, 2017, the Waukee Board of Education held two public hearings to determine calendar hours vs days and the 2017-18 school calendar. The Board approved the 2017-18 school calendar as presented based on 1080 hours of instructional time.
Effective July 1, 2014, all public and accredited nonpublic school districts are required to choose between 180 days or 1080 hours of instruction per year. School boards are authorized to make this decision, but must hold a public hearing prior to adoption of the district calendar.
Andy Pals, calendar committee chair, presented the 2017-18 Waukee Education Association (WEA) school calendar recommendations to the Board on December 12, 2016.
The approved calendar includes the following key dates:
- The first day of school is Wednesday, August 23, 2017. This is the earliest start date allowed by state law.
- Winter break is Dec. 22, 2017, through Jan 2, 2018. Classes will resume on Jan. 3, 2018.
- Spring break is March 12-16. Classes will resume on March 19, 2018.
- The last day of school will be May 30, 2018.
