The Waukee High School (WHS) wrestling team recorded their highest point total and best team finish ever at the State Wrestling Meet last weekend at Wells Fargo Arena.

Six WHS wrestlers contributed to the team’s total of 63 points. That total placed 8th in the large school class and was just nine points away from a 5th place finish.

The Warriors were led by four state medalists. Junior Kyle Biscoglia captured his second straight state championship by pinning his opponent in the second period at 113 pounds. He returned to the state finals by avenging two early season losses to #1 Drew Bennett of Fort Dodge in a 6-3 semifinals victory.

I put in a lot of work during the season and offseason to win another title,” said Biscoglia.  “I had two losses, but due to great coaches and partners I was able to learn from my mistakes and wrestle my best during the state tournament.”

Also, freshman Cody Anderson placed 3rd at 106 pounds with a 5-3 win over #3 Conrad Braswell of Cedar Rapids Prairie.

Sophomore Anthony Zach placed 6th at 152 pounds, and junior Nathan McDonald placed 7th at 285 pounds, winning in overtime against #5 Colin Newell of Ames.

Juniors Brock Parker and Brandon Tessau won matches that added to the team’s point total but did not place individually.

At the 2016 State Wrestling meet Waukee sent three wrestlers, Kyle Biscoglia, Brock Parker and Waukee alum Jakob Allison. The team came in 23rd, tieing with Cedar Rapids Xavier with a point total of 32.5. The team nearly doubled their previous point total with a score of 63 at the 2017 state meet.

“Each of our boys did some amazing things at different times, and we are so excited for them,” said head coach Chad Vollmecke. “My favorite thing about them is that they are more focused on what we could have done better and how to improve for next season. All six are back next year, and several more great teammates are waiting in the wings.”

The wrestlers are already back in the weight room preparing for next season.

“Our plans are to be in the top 3 as a dual and a tournament team next year,” said Vollmecke. “Someone needs to do it; why not us?”
