Waukee Girls Win 5th State Track Title, Boys are State Runner Up

The Waukee Girls and Boys Track teams enjoyed success at the State Track Meet held May 18-20 at Drake Stadium. After both teams went undefeated in meets during the regular season and won conference and state qualifying meet championships, Waukee qualified in 36 of the 38 events contested at the state meet.

The girls’ team won their fifth state championship in the past 8 years in record fashion. Waukee scored 116 team points to shatter the state team point record of 99 points held by Pleasant Valley. It was a complete team effort as the Warriors scored in 14 of 19 events, crowned state champions in four events, and double placed in five individual events.

Three relay wins and an individual event champion sparked a comeback win that found Waukee down by as many as 15 points to Iowa City West early in the meet. The 4×800 relay team of Lily Campbell, Megan Groathouse, Jessica Caraway and Logan Akason won in a time of 9:15.17. The Sprint Medley team of Delaney Taylor, Sydney Winger, Elma Vojic and Lily Campbell won in a time of 1:45.77 and the team of Sydney Winger, Mary Gray, Lauren Nelson, and Hannah Schau broke their own Iowa All-Time record winning the Shuttle Hurdle Relay in a time 1:00.61. Morgan Nealey followed up her runner-up finish at the Drake Relays winning the Shot Put with a throw of 43’5”.

The boys’ team finished second in the team standings with 69 points scoring in 11 of 19 events. It was Waukee’s fifth straight top 5 finish at the state meet. The Warriors were third in 2013, won back to back titles in 2014 and 2015, and placed fifth a year ago. Leading the way for the Warriors were a pair of individual champions and one relay team title. Seniors Josh Andrews and Dan Blocker ended their high school careers as state champions. Andrews won the 800 with a time of 1:54.31 and Blocker won the 100 in a time 11.12. Waukee also won the 4×800 relay for the fifth time in school history. The team of Carson Doty, Ryan Modlin, Tyler Groathouse and Josh Andrews followed up their Drake Relays victory, winning the state title in a time of 7:49.34.
