District Announces New Notification System
Early this school year, the district announced we would be using a new notification system called SchoolMessenger. SchoolMessenger is a fully hosted notification platform used to connect parents, students and staff through voice, SMS text, email and social media. We are excited to announce we are ready to start the first phase of the implementation process.
Phase 1: Emergency Notifications
Waukee Community School District (WCSD) will be using SchoolMessenger for emergency notifications. This includes notifications like inclement weather, late starts or other emergency situations that may arise during school hours. SchoolMessenger fully integrates with PowerSchool, so there is no list for parents to sign up for, however, in order for parents to receive an SMS text parents must complete the “opt-in” process.
Soon parents/guardians who have cell phone information in PowerSchool will receive a one-time bulk text message that states:
“Waukee Community School District messages. Reply Y for aprox 3msgs/mo. Txt HELP 4 info. Msg&data rates may apply. See schoolmessenger.com/tm”
Note, the automatic response message above does not mean the district may only send 3 text messages per month, this is merely an approximation. Also, SchoolMessenger does not charge any message fees to recipients, recipients may be charged for receiving district messages depending on the type of monthly plan they have with their wireless provider.
Parents/guardians who would like to receive notification for the district via SMS text will need to reply to the text message with one of the following key words: “Y”, “Yes”, “Subscribe, “Optin” or Opt In.”
If a parent/guardian does not want to receive text messages from the district, they do not need to reply. Parents/guardians who choose not to “opt-in” will not receive any text messages from the district, they will however still receive email and phone messages.
Parents/guardians who decide at a later time they would like to receive SMS text notification can subscribe by texting one of the key words to 68453. The cell phone numbers used must be in PowerSchool to receive a notification.
You can unsubscribe at any time by texting the key words: “Quit”, “Remove” or “Unsubscribe” to 68453. Parents/guardians can opt-in and opt-out as many times as necessary.
Opting in does not mean that you will immediately start receiving text messages. It simply means that you have indicated your willingness to receive messages from the SchoolMessenger service.
If you would like to add a new cell phone number to your contact information in PowerSchool, please contact your building secretary. The opt-in text message will be sent early next week (week of Oct. 29).
