Theatre Arts Presents: The Rimers of Eldritch

The Rimers of Eldritch is a play by Lanford Wilson. Set in the mid-20th century in Eldritch, Missouri, a decaying Bible Belt town that once was a prosperous coal mining community, it focuses on the murder of an aging hermit and outcast—Skelly Manor.  Nelly, who mistakenly thought he was committing rape when he actually was trying to prevent one, is on trial. Painted as a creeping figure throughout the whole play, we come to realize Skelly as a hero at the end.  Presiding over the trial is the sanctimonious local preacher, a hypocrite who instills the fear of hellfire and eternal damnation in his diminishing flock. Rimers unfolds in a series of several small, seemingly random scenes that occur non-chronologically. There are times during the play when scenes are repeated two or three times. The characters’ dialogue, which Wilson writes to mimic human speech patterns, overlaps from one scene to another and is sometimes presented as a choral reading. This fairly challenging script is written without any true minor characters. By the end of the play, there is a reversal in the perception of each character: those who were cast in a good light become the dark characters at the end. During one scene, Robert talks with Eva about the rime that covers everything.  Of course, as the sun rises and begins to heat the earth, the rime disappears.  In the same way that as the play heats up and gets closer to the scene in which Skelly is killed, the shadow (or rime) over our understanding of Skelly’s death, is melted away so we can see the truth.
