Construction in Waukee is the rule rather than the exception. Currently we have three projects underway; Woodland Hills Elementary, the Vince Meyer Learning Center and Timberline.
Woodland Hills Elementary is located at 1120 South 95th Street in West Des Moines; this will be the District’s seventh elementary building. For those that may be unfamiliar with the area, take 88th St. south past George Mills Parkway (cemetery in the middle of the road) and the building sits just south of the Edgewater Retirement Community. Its overall design will be very similar to Maple Grove, Waukee and Shuler Elementary. It will be approximately 96,000 square feet with a capacity for 750 students. Currently, the project is on schedule for substantial completion in July. Most of the exterior brick is complete; all roof areas are covered and there is a great deal of activity in the interior part of the building. Woodland Hills will be a great addition to this area of West Des Moines.
The Vince Meyer Learning Center (the Original Waukee Elementary) project consists of demolition of the single-story portion of the building along with interior upgrades of the 1917 building. Most notable will be the addition of an elevator that will access all three floors. The gymnasium and kitchen will get much-needed updates along with all new windows, roofs and network wiring.
Last but not least, we have Timberline. Timberline will be a new 8/9 building located on the west side of LA Grant Parkway across from South Middle School. We are slated to break ground on this project in June with completion in July of 2015. It’s overall design will be similar to South Middle School with some additional square footage added to accommodate 9th grade curriculum. Timberline will sit on a 76 acre site that provides the District “green space” for practice fields and space for a future attendance center.
