Starting the Year with New Busing Service
Waukee Community School District will start the year with a new busing service. Durham School Services, a national leader in student transportation, has been awarded a three-year contract to operate bus services for two Iowa school districts starting July 1. The Boards of Education for Waukee Community School District in Waukee, and the Urbandale Community School District in Urbandale, unanimously approved the consolidated contract.
School officials chose Durham for its industry-leading safety and maintenance programs, management capabilities, and commitment to an all-new fleet of buses.
“We spoke to other school districts that are using Durham, and the bus company came highly recommended,” Lora Appenzeller-Miller, chief financial officer for Waukee Community School District, said. “We’re looking forward to a great partnership that will benefit our students through safe and reliable transportation.”
Mike Wedemeyer will serve as the Durham School Services General Manager for Waukee Schools. Wedemeyer brings with him more than 25 years of experience, some of which was spent in the Army National Guard where he worked with transportation and logistics. He also brings with him six years of experience from his time spent as fleet manager for Barr Nunn Transportation in Granger Iowa.
Durham will operate approximately 50 buses for Waukee Community School District. Every bus will feature two digital video cameras to monitor student behavior, and the latest in GPS technology to provide real-time data from the road and help manage fuel consumption. All special education buses will be equipped with air-conditioning.
“Having our students transported in new buses will raise the level of service,” Appenzeller-Miller said. “Making sure the ride to school is safe and comfortable for our children is very important to us.”
