Sixth Grade Health
The sixth graders at Waukee Middle School and South Middle School are studying nutrition and exercise as a way to live to our health potential and prevent non-infectious diseases, like heart disease and Type II Diabetes. Students participated in activities related to analyzing and evaluating food choices by reading food labels and nutrition guides from restaurants in the area. Students tracked, analyzed and evaluated their food choices for a 24-hour period to determine if they received the recommended daily amounts for essential nutrients. Hy-Vee dietitians spoke to the class regarding correct label reading for hidden sugar content and the consequences of too much sugar in our diets. Teachers Chad Jilek and Brian Pierce instructed classes on using Excel worksheets to document and construct charts regarding nutritional content of fast foods.
