Waukee Bond Referendum: Building for the Future
The Waukee Board of Education will be calling for a special election to be held on February 4, 2014 for the sale of $18.9 million in general obligation bonds that would be used to fund construction of a new elementary school at the intersection of Dartmoor and Douglas Parkway in the city of Waukee and HVAC upgrades at Brookview Elementary School.
General obligation tax bonds are used to build schools and additions. The amount of bonding capacity within a district is determined by its debt and its ability to pay off the debt. Bonds cannot be sold without voter approval at an election called a referendum.
This bond referendum requires a 60 percent super-majority “YES” vote to pass. If approved, construction on the new elementary school would begin in 2014 with completion estimated for 2016.
Classroom space must be created to accommodate our rapid growth. Waukee Community School District continues to be the fastest growing district in Iowa. For more than five years we have averaged 466 new students per year with about 209 of those at the elementary level each year.
What happens if it fails?
Increased enrollment is not dependent on the availability of facilities. We are experiencing overcrowding at several elementary schools and class size would be forced to increase. Building needs will continue to increase with time and potentially cost more to solve if we wait.
What about Taxes?
With passage of the school levy portion of property taxes will remain unchanged at $16.57669.
The school levy is only a portion of your total property tax bill. The school district does not set any other tax rates.
A “YES” vote does not raise the district’s tax rate!
What can you do?
