Maple Grove Mixed Media Leaders

An exciting, new leadership opportunity is being offered to our fourth grade students at Maple Grove. The concept and planning has been put together by their technology teacher, Carrie Dirksen and instructional coach, Leslie Perrigo.

Beginning this month, fourth grade students will have the chance to apply and interview for a Maple Grove Mixed Media Leader position. They will be accepting 4-5 students for each position, for a total of 16-20 students.  This commitment will start this year and continue to the end of their fifth grade year.

Dirksen and Perrigo will serve as the facilitators for the positions.  The purpose of the Mixed Media Leadership positions is to provide an authentic learning experience while showing exceeding skill and/or deep passion for information literacy and technology and to increase student involvement in the Maple Grove community through creative production, collaboration and communication.

Once the Mixed Media Leaders have been assembled, students will be in charge of capturing and communicating Maple Grove events and highlights throughout the year.  Available leader positions include:

Photographer:  Responsible for taking photos of different events and people at Maple Grove along with candid photos (random photos taken at great moments)

Videographer:  Responsible for capturing video of different events and people at Maple Grove along with candid video (random video taken at great moments)

Communications:  Responsible for writing short communication pieces about the events occurring at Maple Grove to be shared across social media and blogs directly by supervised and connected with Maple Grove Elementary. Additional responsibilities will include interviewing guests, etc.

Producers:  Responsible for taking selected content and synthesizing it into a final product (iMovie, presentation, slideshow, etc.) for the Maple Grove community to view and enjoy.

February 2014:  Interested students complete online application and gather work samples. All applications must be submitted by March 7, 2014.

March 2014:  Conduct interviews and select students.  Four to Five students will be accepted for each position, for a total of 16-20 students serving as Mixed Media Leaders.

April-May 2014: Leaders will meet 1-2 times a month either before school from 8:15-8:45 or after school from 3:45-4:15. Final determination of meeting times will be made once the crew is established.  Experts from the field will teach students different aspects of creative production.  With Dirksen’s and Perrigo’s support, students will have opportunities to explore and try out their new skills.  Producers will design the end-of-the-year product to share with the Maple Grove community.
