Teachers Collaborate to Publish Fine Arts Discovery Book Series for Children
Two teachers at Waukee Middle School recently joined forces to create a new children’s book series to get young minds excited about the arts. The first book of the series, Little Miss Mary Discovers Music Outside Her Window, was published in June by instrumental music teacher Mary Crandell and art teacher Elizabeth Huether.
The two are hosting a free “Kick-Off Bash & Book Signing” of the Little Miss Mary Discovery Series at the Waukee Public Library, 950 Warrior Ln, Waukee, IA 50263, on Tuesday, August 19, from 6-8 p.m.
“We hope that the book ignites children’s love of the arts while nurturing and strengthening the natural creativity of the young mind,” Crandell said.
This project has been years in the making for Crandell after spending a couple of years thinking about how to better engage young children in the arts she decided to write a book with the help of Huether.
This is the first book Crandell has written and the first book Huether has illustrated. Their vision is to engage children, ages 3-8, in 30-minute sessions that would include literacy: read the book with children, synthesizing: discuss and process the major concepts of the book and creative thinking: hands on creation of music using the children’s own environment as the vehicle to create their own music.
