PBIS at South Middle School
The 2014-15 school year got off to a great start with South Middle School students learning behavior expectations for locations across the building. The Positive Behavior and Interventions Supports (PBIS) committee of teachers and PBIS Student Ambassador groups met over the summer to create videos demonstrating examples and non-examples of appropriate behavior in common areas throughout the school. These videos were shown to the student body during the first two days of school. Students traveled to places, such as the lunchroom, where they were given time to watch the video and then participate in a team building activity with their advisory. Students also created a poster with their advisory illustrating connections they have with each other based on common interests or experiences.
Students participate in a variety of PBIS based activities throughout the year. Warrior Cards are given to students for demonstrating the PBIS Keys to Success. Students can then redeem their cards at the Warrior Cart for items, such as school supplies or passes to earn privileges, such as snack passes. Students are nominated by teachers for the Student of the Month award in specific content areas. Teams plan a celebration at the end of each quarter for all students with activities that correlate to the PBIS Key focus of the quarter. PBIS Ambassadors plan behavior lessons and activities and go into the classrooms to present to their peers. Teams also plan additional activities at any given time during the year. Opportunities for reteaching lessons take place after long school breaks and times when teachers recognize the need for a refresher of expectations. The PBIS team of teachers and student ambassadors are ready to make this school year fantastic!
