Second Graders Enjoy Rocks

On  September 5, Sarah Volkens’ class had a guest visitor, the teacher’s dad. Larry Stanley came to meet his daughter’s second grade friends, share his rock collection with the class and, of course, stay for lunch… he just couldn’t pass up the soft pretzel and cheese. The students’ eyes were glued to him and the amazing things he shared with the class.  Not only did he bring in his geode and polished rock collection, but he also showed them petrified wood/bone and a few fossils!

Larry Stanley visits his daughter’s second grade classroom. He explained how geodes are formed and where they can be found in Iowa. He shared geodes that were still left whole and those that had been cracked open to show the crystals.

He also shared several rocks that his Grandpa Stanley had cut using his rock saw. Brooklyn Clements helped him polish them as the class watched them transform from dull to shiny and show off their beautiful colors!
