Iowa Department of Education Releases Guidelines for School Start Waivers
On Wednesday, January 21 the Iowa Department of Education released new guidelines for school start waivers. School districts were notified in December of 2014 that the Iowa Department of Education would stop granting automatic waivers to school districts seeking to start classes earlier in the summer. The current law states that districts must start school no earlier than the calendar week that includes September 1.
The Waukee Community School District Calendar Committee is working to provide alternate calendar recommendations, including a September 2 start date, to the board for the March 9 meeting.
Applications for an early start date waiver must be received by March 15, 2015. Districts that have applied for a start date waiver for the 2015-2016 school year will be notified of the status of their request no later than April 15, 2015.
