Students Learn About Costume Selection
SMS 8th graders learned that when selecting costumes for a play, more is involved than just choosing clothing. Students were assigned three characters with specific criteria–for example, a princess attending the ball who needed to perform three high leg kicks–and given only paper, colored tape, and a stapler to complete their task. The results were tested in a short performance on stage at the end of one class period. It is a favorite unit for the students as they problem-solve with lack of time, fragile materials, and needs of the actor.
