Waukee Jazz I Qualifies for Iowa Jazz Championships
Waukee Jazz I finished in second place at the South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association (SIBA) District Jazz Festival this December, qualifying them for the Iowa Jazz Championships on March 31.
Only the top two bands in each of the six bandmasters districts qualify. Waukee’s Jazz I is led by some of the best directors and musicians in the state. Jazz I has placed in the top three at the State Jazz Championships for the last eight years, with a first place finish in 2012.
Students in grades nine through twelve audition to be in one of three Jazz Bands at Waukee High School (WHS) in the spring.
“My favorite part of the season so far is seeing this particular group come together musically. We have many new members this year, so it took a while for the group to start to gel but we are blessed with many talented individuals who are now starting to play very well as a group,” Page said.
Senior Justin Page, who is in his fourth year playing for Jazz I, plays the Alto Saxophone and the Soprano Saxaphone. “My listening, soloing and blending skills have progressed much further than what I ever expected my freshman year,” Justin said. “Through these groups, I have had wonderful experiences, both educationally and socially. I am so grateful for the music program at Waukee and the people involved who pushed me to work hard and succeed.”
Senior Sebastien Mueller, who plays the trombone, has also played in Jazz I for four years now. “Our goals for this season are to put forth the most effort we can towards our performance and make it to the finals for the championships,” Mueller said. “Knowing all of the people that participate in this group has been a huge plus for me.”
