Waukee Elementary Celebrates Earth Day by Planting a Tree
Students in the Environmental Leaders group at Waukee Elementary School (WE) planted a tree for Earth Day. WE is implementing The Leader in Me program this year and part of their leadership focus is to have every 4th and 5th grader get involved in a leadership committee.
The group’s fifteen students brainstormed ideas to help the environment. A few months ago, they decided to plant a tree for Earth Day and place decorative bricks around it, which the students painted themselves.
Each student participated by writing a letter to different companies, asking for donations. Earle May donated the tree, MulchMart donated the bricks and Sherwin Williams donated the paint. Earle May employees explained each step of the tree-planting process and allowed students to take part in the process. It turned out to be a great day!
