PBIS at South Middle School
At South Middle School we are off to a great start this school year, and we have had a great start to the year with PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports). This year we made a few changes to PBIS that we would like to share.
We have re-written our PBIS Keys to Success to match our College and Career Readiness Skills. Our Keys to success now include…
- Demonstrates Respect
- Collaborates with others
- Productively works towards accomplishing a goal
- Utilizes feedback for improvement.
We are very excited about our CCRS standards and will be reporting out on these standards/skills throughout the semester.
We previously used the terms “minor and major” in reference to behavior concerns in the classroom. We are now using the term “documented behavior” in reference to what used to be a minor. This will refer to concerns such as disruptions in class, excessive talking and disrespect, etc. What used to be referred to as “major” will now be called an “office documented behavior”. This includes behavior concerns that are somewhat more serious and would require the student to make a trip to the office to discuss said behavior. We feel that these new terms more accurately reflect the concerns we are dealing with and they are the same terms currently used at Waukee Middle School.
This year we will continue to emphasize positive communication with parents. This will be reflected on our efforts to email, call, and send home hand-written letters. We want to make sure you hear all about what your student is doing well. Too often those messages get lost in the busyness of school. Just last year we sent home over 3,500 positive communications. We look forward to continuing the same level of positive communication this year.
Lastly, we are beginning to think about our quarterly PBIS celebrations for the year. They are in the early planning stages but these celebrations are always exciting for the kids. and we look forward to them.
It’s already shaping up to be a great year at South Middle School!
