School Board Members Take Oath of Office

Newly elected board members, Susan Bunz (incumbent), Scott Blum and Ethan Huisman, took the Oath of Office at the September 14 Board of Education Meeting. Mary Scheve was re-elected to President of the Board and David Cunningham was elected to Vice President of the Board at the meeting.

The Board voted to keep the same meeting schedule, second and fourth Monday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Waukee District Office Board Room, 560 SE University Ave., Waukee, IA 50263.

Special thanks to retiring board members Larry Lyon (11 years)  and Jerry Ripperger (10 years)  for their service to Waukee students and staff.

Name: Mary Scheve
Title: President
My husband Ray and I have three children, Zoe, Tim and Max. I’m a a third generation Waukee High School graduate and third generation school board member. I returned to the district with my  family when our oldest started kindergarten in 2000. I am employed as Chief Financial Officer at August Home Publishing Company. I have been involved with the Waukee Foundation Auction/Dinner, co-chairing the committee for three years. Additionally she has served on the Waukee Foundation Board, School Improvement groups along with committee roles at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Greater Des Moines Cyclone Club and Waukee Ragbrai subcommittee.

Name: David Cunningham

My wife Janice and I have three children, Brendan, Alyssa and Patrick that have all attended Waukee Schools. I am a Certified Financial Planner™ with HJN Advisors and have more than 20 years of professional experience in the financial services field. I have served on various boards, most recently as Waukee Band Booster President, where I started Celebration in Brass at Waukee held in July that attracts close to 3,000 spectators. I wanted to become a school board member because I feel every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in school and we can accomplish this by providing a world class education where each student has a chance to discover, and develop, his/her passion for learning and success.

The next decade will be important and challenging for the District as it works to accommodate rapid growth. As a mom with two children in Waukee schools, I want to be a part of this process, helping to guide decisions that will impact students for many years to come. I’ve been involved with Waukee schools since 2006, serving on the 2012-13 Boundary Committee; the 2013 Secondary Study Committee; as Brookview PTO Vice-President and Staff Appreciation Chair; and as District PTO Secretary. I work part-time as a Missions Assistant at Lutheran Church of Hope and my faith is an essential part of who I am.

Name: Patrick Nehls

I grew up in Clive and graduated from Valley High School. I met my wife, Rebecca, while attending Central College in Pella. I received my MBA from Drake in 2001. We have two children and  I currently work at GuideOne Insurance as an Information Technology Manager. I’ve served on the Waukee Community School Foundation for the last four years and have been the organization’s president this past year. I have had the pleasure of getting to know administrators, principals and teachers in our district. We have an incredible district with exceptional leadership at all levels.

For the past 18 years I have been fortunate to be part of the Waukee School District. I moved to the district my sophomore year in high school, and graduated from Waukee High School in 2000. I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University in 2004, as I pursued my dream of becoming a high school teacher. After graduation I was hired by Bernie Van Roekel as a high school social studies teacher at my alma mater. I received my Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Iowa State in 2008. For nine years, I taught AP American Government, American Government, Economics and World History at Waukee High School. I also served as the student council sponsor for seven years, and was a member of many building and district-wide committees. My wife Cara and I were high school sweethearts, graduating from Waukee in 2000. Cara is a sonographer for the Lakeview OBGYN Clinic in West Des Moines. We have three sons, Ethan 13, Taylor 5, and Carson 3. I am beginning my third year as the Dean of Students at Dallas Center-Grimes High School. I look forward to serving on the Waukee School Board to help lead the fastest growing school district in our state, and continue on the track of offering a world class education for each and every student. I believe my time as a student, teacher, dean and parent will allow me to bring some new experiences to the Waukee School Board.

SusanBunz Name: Susan Bunz
Title: Board Member
Susan and her husband John have two children in the Waukee Community School District, daughters Ellie and Emma. Their son Sam is a 2011 Waukee graduate and is a student at Iowa State University. Susan is serving her second term as a school board member. She is a past president of the Waukee Foundation Board and served on the Waukee Foundation Auction and Dinner committee for six years; serving as a co-chair of the event for three of those years. Susan received her BA in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa in 1987 and her JD from Drake University School of Law in 1990.

My wife JoAnna and I have two daughters attending Waukee Schools – entering 7th and 9th grade. I have been the owner and optometrist at Elite Eye Care since opening the practice in 2010. I served on the 2013 Secondary Study Committee, and have volunteered for and/or supported the Waukee School Foundation, Waukee Band Boosters, Waukee Athletic Boosters, Maple Grove PTO, as well as many other teams, events, and clubs at the elementary, middle, and high schools. We have an exceptional school district with extraordinary teachers, principals, and administrators. I am running for school board to be a part of the process as Waukee Schools continue to grow, yet maintains its excellence in educating and preparing our students.

Name: David J. Wilkerson, Ph.D.
Title: Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Dave Wilkerson has been Superintendent of Schools at Waukee since 2004. Prior to that he served as Associate Superintendent at Waukee from 1994-2004. Before becoming an administrator, Dr. Wilkerson taught high school government, economics, American History, and coached several sports including basketball and track. He received his B.A. in social science secondary education from The University of Northern Iowa, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Iowa State University where he received a research excellence award and the Jordan Larson Excellence in Educational Administration award.
