Board Approves 2 New Admin Positions
The Waukee Board of Education approved the recommendation to appoint Kirk Johnson as a new associate superintendent and Katie Ferguson as the principal for Grant Ragan at the November 9, Board of Education meeting. These are new positions to the District.
Kirk is currently the principal at Waukee High School and Katie is an assistant principal at Walnut Hills and Vince Meyer Learning Center. Kirk and Katie will officially assume their new duties starting July 1, 2016. The process of filling their positions will begin in December.
“The district’s continued rapid growth has necessitated the need for additional administrative support for students and staff,” Dr. David Wilkerson, superintendent of Waukee Schools said. “As we continue to plan for a second high school it is important that we also plan for our administrative needs. There is a huge amount of additional work beyond the normal day-to-day requirements in the preparation for the opening of a second high school. This new second associate superintendent position will allow us to better meet the needs of our families, principals and community.”
Kirk brings with him 17 years of education experience. Kirk started his career as a business education teacher at Boyden Hull then Southeast Polk Community School District. After six years in the classroom and earning his Masters of Education (Principal Licensure) from the University of Nebraska, Kirk transitioned to administration. Over the next six years Kirk worked as middle/high school principal at Remsen-Union and later high school principal for Vinton-Shellsburg Community School Districts. In 2007 Kirk earned his Certificate of Advanced Studies (Superintendent Licensure) from Iowa State University. For the last five years he has served as Waukee High School principal.
“The opportunity to continue to serve the students, staff and community in this new capacity is extremely exciting. I am grateful to be a part of a school district that has a vision for teaching and student learning, embraces the opportunity that enrollment growth presents and allocates resources accordingly,” Kirk said.
Katie will be heavily involved from this point forward in facility decisions and the staffing process for Grant Ragan. The staffing process for Grant Ragan (transfers and new hires) will begin shortly after the first of the year. Katie will continue in her assistant principal role throughout the 2015-16 school year.
Katie’s educational journey began at the University of Northern Iowa, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She received her Masters of Education (Principal Licensure) from Viterbo University. Prior to coming to Waukee, she taught for seven years as an elementary teacher at West Des Moines Community School District. For the last six years Katie has been serving as an assistant principal for Waukee Community School District.
“I am excited to bring our teachers, families and students together, as we create a solid foundation of learning and leadership at Grant Ragan Elementary. I have had the opportunity to serve Brookview, Eason, Waukee Elementary, Vince Meyer Learning Center and Walnut Hills and feel my wide range of administration experiences in our district will allow me to create an environment that fosters learning and empowers students to succeed,” Katie said.
Grant Ragan is scheduled to open in the fall of 2016 and will serve kindergarten through fifth grade students.
