Proposed Date(s)

School Start Tuesday, August 23, 2016 A mid-week school start has been a favored option for a number of years.  We recommend a start date of Tuesday, August 23, 2016.  This start date is earliest allowed per the state government law.
Winter Break Friday, Dec 23, 2016 through Sun, Jan 1, 2017. Classes resume on, Jan 2, 2017 Students would be on break from Friday, December 23, 2016 through Jan 1, 2017.  Classes would resume on  Jan 2, 2017.
Spring Break March 13-17, 2017 Area superintendents have set March 13-17, 2017 as Spring Break Week.
Fall Conferences Elementary Conferences: To be determined During their conference weeks in November and in March, elementary teachers will schedule individual conferences to fit parent schedules, but will have one common evening time and common time on an early dismissal day.
Waukee Middle/South Middle School to be determined Waukee Middle School, South Middle School, Prairieview and Timberline will schedule conferences in the evenings for the Fall and Spring semesters.
Prairieview & Timberline: To be determined
HS conferences are scheduled one evening per quarter Waukee High School will continue to schedule one conference evening per quarter.
To be determined A format similar to that in the fall would occur with spring conferences.
Teacher Work Days Work Days for all staff:

  • August 17,18,19, 22, 2016
  • Friday, Oct. 28, 2016
  • Tuesday, May 30, 2017
The Committee has gathered data from teachers and administrators at every building and has attempted to customize Work Days to best meet the needs of teachers at varied grade levels and buildings, so that they can best facilitate student learning, prepare for instruction or for conferences, or to complete assessment evaluations. The Committee proposes six fixed Work Days and one flex work day.  The Committee recommends these fixed work days: four work days prior to the start of school, on Friday, October 28, 2016 and the day following the last day of school. The recommended Flex Work Day combination is Friday, Jan 13, 2017 and Friday, Feb 24, 2017. No students would attend school on those Flex Work Days.
Flex Work Days:

  • HS: Mon Jan 13, 2017 (Vacation Day: Fri Feb 24)
  • WMS, SMS:Mon Jan 13, 2017 (Vacation Day:  Fri Feb 24)
  • PVS, Timberline:Mon Jan 13, 2017 (Vacation Day:  Fri Feb 24)
  • All Elementaries:Fri, Feb 24, 2017 (Vacation Day: Fri, Jan 13)
Teacher Quality Professional Day Tuesday, August 16, 2016 The Committee recommends placement of the Professional Development Day funded with Teacher Quality money on Tues, August 16, 2016.  This date was selected with input from the Teacher Quality Fund Committee and from teachers.

We are hopeful that this calendar meets student learning needs at every level of instruction, allows for individual building preferences and needs, and that it fairly implements the requests, suggestions, and preferences of teachers, administrators, and families in the district.

As this committee gathered input from individual buildings, considered student learning needs, teacher planning needs, and calendar options, we have attempted to provide a school year calendar which will maximize the learning opportunities of our students, make use of current research on optimal learning and 21st Century educational goals, as well as to take into consideration the needs of families and of the community.
