Junior Kaitlyn Redman wins High School Journalism Award


On April 6, Waukee junior Kaitlyn Redman won top honors at the Leadership and Innovation in High School Media Conference at Drake University.

Redman won the Iowa High School Leadership in Journalism Award. According to the Iowa Newspaper Association, “the award recognizes the work of an Iowa high school student journalist who has demonstrated leadership abilities that contribute to the success of her student publications.”

Redman is involved in the publications program and The Arrowhead, the high school student newspaper. She has several print and web articles covering investigative reporting to more lighthearted stories.

“I have a big passion for the truth,” Redman said. No matter the consequences, she believes in telling both sides of the story fairly and accurately.

Publications advisers Sheena Grove and Kent Peterson contributed letters of recommendation regarding Redman’s abilities and leadership skills. In addition to her devotion to journalism, Redman also involves herself in fashion and softball.Though Redman is a junior, she will be attending Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado on a softball scholarship after high school. She’ll be studying mass communication and art.
