District Approves Land Purchase for 9th Elementary Building and 28e Agreement

Waukee Community School District approved a land purchase agreement for a ninth elementary building and a 28e site acquisition agreement for a second high school at the May 9 Board of Education Meeting.

A second high school and ninth elementary school are needed to meet the district’s rapid enrollment growth. For the last five years, the district’s enrollment has increased by an average of 500 students per year.

The new elementary school will be located in Urbandale west of Alice’s road between Meredith and Waterford. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2017, with the building opening in the fall of 2019.

The City of Waukee and school district have worked jointly over the last year and a half to create the 28e agreement, which will allow the City and district to share green space. The City of Waukee is slated to take action on a land purchase at the May 16 city council meeting. If approved, the second high school will be located north of Hickman Road and east of 10th Street in Waukee. Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2018 with the building opening in the fall of 2021. More details will be released about this agreement and its benefits for the district and city after the city council meeting May 16.
