Waukee Captures Fourth Girls Track Title, Boys Win 2 Relays

The Waukee Girls track team finished their season in championship form at the State Track Meet at Drake Stadium. The Waukee girls won their fourth state team championship and their first since 2013 by scoring 83 points to defeat runner up Pleasant Valley who scored 77. It was a total team effort as the girls did not win a single event during the 3 day meet, but placed in 16 of the 19 events, the most ever by one team. Relays were a strength for the Warriors as they placed in the top 5 in all 7 relays, highlighted by runner up finishes in the 4×800, Distance Medley, 4×200 and Shuttle Hurdle relays. In addition, individuals placed in all but two field events and one running event. All 16 girls brought home at least one medal and six athletes: Logan Akason, Talia Buss, Lily Campbell, Mary Kate Gray, Hannah Schau and Elma Vojic medaled in 4 events.

The Waukee Boys track team continued their success at the state meet. After back to back state championships in 2014 and 2015, the Warriors placed 5th as a team. Highlighting the weekend for the boys were state championship performances by two relays, the 4×800 and Shuttle Hurdle relay. The team of Ryan Modlin, Carson Doty, Josh Andrews and Kayde Penn won the 4×800 relay in a time of 7:47.08, the 4th fast time in state history. Waukee also won the Shuttle Hurdle Relay. The team of Kalen Renshaw, Nick Wessels, Aaron McCrary and Nate Halligan won in a time of 56.09. It marked the 4th straight year that Waukee has won the shuttle hurdle relay. The Warriors also got top 5 finishes in the 4×400, 4×100 and 1600 Medley relays and a 5th place finish from Dan Blocker in the 200. The 4×400 posted the 5th fastest time in state history and broke the school record.
