WHS hosts 2016 CIML Art Show
Waukee High School (WHS) hosted the 2016 CIML Art Show from April 12-13. The show is a community event where students from Ames, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Marshalltown, Valley West and Waukee submit and display their artwork for judging and recognition.
Opening night was on Tuesday evening and the day show was from 9-11:30 a.m. The day show comprised not only viewing of student works, but also a voting period and the judges’ presentation of other honors. Judges awarded Blue Merit and Honorable Mention awards in each category and a Best in Show award in the 2D and 3D categories. Students and attendees voted for the “Student Choice Award” winner.
Each of the six schools could submit up to 25 works of any medium. Students could submit hand-made creative pieces, analog photos or digitally altered photos. In total, there were 24 categories.
Eleven Waukee students received awards, including Lindey Carlson who took best of show for her expressive self-portrait created with a charcoal medium. Carlson won with great humility and gratitude, explaining her astonishment upon finding out:
“I was just extremely surprised. I mean, I was happy but also embarrassed because I never thought my work was that special; in this piece in particular, I was mostly focused on conveying my personality in my work. Winning definitely helped strengthen my confidence as an artisit and really made me realize that artist can’t be compared–everyone expresses themselves differently.”
Chris Vance, creator of the “No Action too Small” mural downtown, was the judge of the show. He told Carlson, “I love your attention to detail. You have a lot of talent, and you should never settle.”
