MG Branch Newsletter
Message From Principal Tierney
Can you believe that it is already the month of December? It seems that every school year seems to go by faster and faster. Knowing that this time of year is recognized as time of joy for many, we realize that it may sometimes also become a time for stress for families and in turn students; we want to be able to support families in any way that we can, therefore, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Our fundraiser in the fall was such a huge success and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity, therefore, I wanted to take a moment and update you on where we and our PTO currently reside in terms of spending those funds. Currently, we have a team researching the very best and cost effective resources available for our leveled guided reading library. We have several meetings scheduled with various publishing companies in order to find the best materials for our students. We will keep you posted when we make our final decision. We are so excited to offer more literacy resources for our teachers and students.
Finally, we are excited to host our Maple Grove Night at the Field House (Waukee High School), as our Waukee Warriors takes on Des Moines East. Our students will be recognized by being invited to the floor at half-time to take part in a game in which multiple students may win prizes. Our 5th Grade Chorus will also be singing the National Anthem. The girls game will start at 6:15 p.m.
Thanks for all that you do to be an active partner in your child’s education! We can’t thank you enough for the difference you are making.
Notes From the Nurse
Fall is upon us and the weather changes hourly. Please make sure to send your child with the appropriate clothing and dress in layers. Also, keep in mind sometimes the grass and equipment can have dew and students may get wet, you may want to put a spare pair of clothes in their backpack in case they get wet.

Preschool Super Leaders Impacting the World
Our preschool students and staff are teaming up with Kaylee Kares this year to bring a little bit of sunshine to hundreds of kids as they enter the foster care system. Below is a little bit about the project:
For the 3rd year I am collecting “Kaylee Kares” bags. It is a foster care project that started out as a 4-H project. I had a goal of 50 bags and ended up collecting almost 300 bags. It is a project to collect bags for babies, children and teens to be given to them as they enter foster care, as they sometimes come with nothing. We collect the bags and then deliver them to Buchanan County DHS, where they are then shared with Fayette, Black Hawk and Delaware counties. This project is important to me as I was adopted from foster care and my family has fostered over 20 children. What you need: Inexpensive bag, Pair of pajamas, Comb or brush, Toothbrush or Toothpaste. Thank you!!!! Kaylee
Our preschool classes will be putting the bags together, but we are looking for any of the supplies needed to make the bags: bag, pair of pajamas, toothbrush and toothpaste, and comb or brush. Items will be collected through Friday, December 16th. We will then get these bags delivered to Kaylee over Winter Break. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of children!
Literacy Tree Challenge
Maple Grove’s Library is having a literacy tree challenge during the month of December. Families are challenged to donate new or gently used books to build a literacy tree in the library. The books collected will be donated to charity. The grade level that collects the most books will win a popcorn party in the library! Please have students bring any books they choose to donate to their classroom teacher from December 5-December 21st. Please contact Mrs. Mefford if you have any questions.
