News from the Woods
Welcome to Woodland Hills!
Welcome to Woodland Hills! We’re so excited about the start of this new school year and partnering with you in your child’s education. I believe it is the relationships formed and collaboration between the students, families, and staff that make a building special. I look forward to playing a role in fostering a learning environment conducive to high levels of learning at Woodland Hills.
We have several new students and families joining us this year as well as many returning students and families. I’m excited that you are at Woodland Hills, and I look forward to meeting or reconnecting with all of you!
Mrs. Taggart and I are looking forward to another great year focused on learning for all students! The staff at Woodland Hills is dedicated to providing a quality education and a caring environment, and we’re proud to have a team of amazing teachers!
Please read below for reminders about traffic flow during arrival and dismissal. We appreciate your cooperation with these procedures and helping us keep students safe!
Mr. Shumaker, Principal
There are two options for parents dropping off or picking up children at school.
First, you may park your vehicle in the parking lot and use the crosswalk at the main entrance to escort your child to or from your vehicle.
Children may not be in the parking lot without being accompanied by an adult.
Children will not be allowed to walk by themselves to your vehicle, but will remain on the sidewalk until you walk across for them. Please use the crossing guard at the main entrance.
Second, you may access the parent drop off/pick up lane.
Cars will be directed to pull forward to drop off/pick up students toward the front of the line as cars exit the drop off/pick up lane. This will keep traffic moving forward.
Parents in the pick up lane must stay in their vehicles.
Please do not pull in front of other cars or form a double lane by the curb to drop off/pick up students.
Please do not wait on 95th street to access the parent drop off/pick up lane. If the parent drop off/ pick up lane exceeds the school property, please:
Park in the school parking lot and use the crosswalk to accompany your child to and from your vehicle.
Park in the school parking lot until you have an opportunity to pull in the parent drop off/ pick up lane.
Please be patient, the process is an efficient process when the procedures are followed. It typically takes ten minutes or less to safely dismiss roughly 600+ Woodland Hills students. These procedures have been put in place to increase the safety of all children!
Curriculum Night — Thursday, September 7 (New Date)
Curriculum Night is Thursday, September 7 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. This is a PARENTS only evening designed to provide more specific information about your child’s classroom and instruction. The schedule is as follows:
6:00 pm – 6:30 pm Kindergarten & First Grade (presentations in each classroom)
6:30 pm – 7:00 pm Related Arts (presentations in the library)
7:00 pm – 7:30 pm Second & Third Grade (presentations in each classroom)
7:30 pm – 8:00 pm Fourth & Fifth Grade (presentations in each classroom)
Raptor Visitor System
The Waukee Community School District uses a visitor management system called Raptor. This system will allow each school building to screen all visitors entering
the building against sexual offender registries in all 50 states and establish a consistent sign-in process across the district.
All visitors must report to the main office upon arrival to the school. We will scan a driver’s license (or other government issued ID) and print a visitor badge. The visitor must also sign out of the office when they leave the building. The ONLY information kept in the screener is: first name, last name, and date of birth. Thank you for your help!
Attention: We have a new version of the Raptor visitor system and NO previously scanned ID’s were saved. As a result, we’d like to start building up our database of visitors again. While you are in the building the evening of Thursday, September 7 please feel free to stop by the office with your Photo ID and get scanned into our Raptor visitor system. This can significantly expedite the process of signing in on days when many parents are visiting school at the same time.
Mark your calendar! Picture Day is Friday, September 8. Look for more information on your child’s picture day order form that is coming home today. Visit mylifetouch.com to order pictures online — Woodland Hills Picture Day ID is: BN807516Q0
Volunteering/Visiting Woodland Hills
We welcome visitors and volunteers at Woodland Hills! Please feel free to join your child for lunch or volunteer any time except for the first two weeks of the school year.
To make every reasonable effort to provide a safe learning environment for our students, all prospective volunteers must complete an online volunteer form. The form is found here online volunteer form. It takes about 5 minutes to complete and must be completed before you can volunteer in any of Waukee CSD’s buildings.
A call/note to the teacher is appreciated so that schedules may be coordinated. Please do not expect a conference with your child’s teacher when class is in session. We discourage student’s siblings from visiting school with parents, as their presence becomes a distraction to learning.

News from the Nurse
Welcome back to Woodland Hills! I hope everyone had a safe and healthy summer. It is an exciting time for students and staff.
For future reference:
*Keep your child home for at least 24 hours after they have been ill. They must be fever free without medication and not vomiting for 24 hours before coming back to class.
*Take children to the doctor as soon as possible if they are showing signs or symptoms of the flu.
*Use good prevention habits to keep yourself and your children healthy. Wash hands with soap and water frequently during the day. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a Kleenex when you cough and sneeze.
Required kindergarten paperwork is to be turned into the health office as soon as possible. If the necessary paperwork has not been turned into the health office, you will be receiving a letter in the mail stating what we are missing for your child. If you have questions or concerns or need copies of health forms, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the health office 987-5196. A grateful thank you to those parents who have already turned in the required paperwork!
Please remember that we have students in the school who have life-threatening allergies. If you have any questions regarding the Waukee Community School District’s allergy policy please refer to the student handbook.
As always, please feel free to call or stop by to ask questions, address concerns, or just to say hi.

If your child comes back to school following an appointment, we ask that you sign him/her in at the office. Your child will be issued a pass from the secretary in order to return to their class. These safety and bookkeeping procedures will ensure that we have an accurate accounting of each of our students.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
The Waukee Community School District has a policy designed to assure parents and students the full implementation, protection and enjoyment of their right under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. A copy of the District’s policy is available for review in the office of the principal of all of our schools. This law requires the school district to designate as “directory information” any personally identifiable information taken from a student’s educational records prior to making such information available to the public. The school district has designated the following information as directory information: Student’s name, participation in officially recognized activities and sports; weight and height of members of athletic teams; dates of attendance; degrees and awards received. You have the right to refuse the designation of directory information with respect to your student provided that you notify the school district in writing no later than September 15 of this school year. If you desire to make such a refusal, please visit the Waukee web site at www.waukeeschools.org . Once there, choose ”New to Waukee”. Next choose “Student and Parents” from the toolbar. Then scroll down to “Forms”. Complete the FERPA form and return it to school by September 15. If you have no objections to the use of student information, you do not need to take any action.
