Girls on the Run Coaches Needed!

Grant Ragan Elementary’s Girls on the Run team is currently seeking volunteer coaches for the spring 2018 seasons.
Volunteers have a tremendous opportunity to help girls understand the true inner power they possess; to serve as the critical ‘fuel’ that propels them forward in life.
As a volunteer coach for Girls on the Run, you can unleash the strength, bravery, and limitless potential of girls right here in Central Iowa.

Girls on the Run coaches are as unique as the girls they serve. Just like the girls, many are not runners.
They are people just like YOU who take great pride and care in role modelling character, connectedness, and inner strength.

Girls on the Run coaches are truly a reflection of the girls we serve here in Central Iowa. By being themselves, they prove that one person can really make a difference.
And they have a lot of fun too!

Coach requirements:

  • Complete NEW Coach Application
  • Complete background check
  • Complete 1 hour online training
  • Attend one in-person training
    • Feb. 18, 8-Noon
    • Feb. 24, 8-Noon
    • Feb. 28 5-9 PM
  • Become CPR/First Aid certified

Coaches need to be able to commit to attend practice twice a week for the 10-week season (Tuesday and Thursday 3:45-5:00 PM) and end of season 5K.

With gratitude,
Christa Vander Leest
Girls on the Run of Central Iowa
Council Director

On December 19th, Dave Sharp (Manager of Nutrition Department), was presented with the first semester WaukTheTalk award during morning announcements.  First grade teacher, Lorrie Tryon, nominated Dave because he’s kind, helpful, always has a smile, and really gets to know the students and staff. Valentine Party

Valentine Party is Wednesday, February 14th from 2:30pm to 3:15pm.

Just a few helpful reminders for the Valentine Party:

  • Please avoid bringing treats that contain peanuts/nuts and state “May be processed in a facility with peanuts/tree nuts.”
  • Utilize our nutrition department, order through RevTrak. Simple and easy!
  • Homemade items are NOT allowed in the school.
  • We are not able to prepare food in the classroom.
  • ALL TREATS/SNACKS need to be commercially prepared and packaged for distribution with intact ingredient labels.
  • Products change all the time, please read labels.  Krispy Kreme is NOT a nut free facility anymore.
  • If you have questions please call Nurse Sara at 987.2767

Please follow these steps for when your child is sick:

Keep your child home for at least 24 hours when he or she is sick. This means your child must be fever free without medication (Temperature of 99.9 and below), and not vomiting for 24 hours before coming back to class (school policy).

Take children into the doctor as soon as possible if they are showing flu- like symptoms. Please visit the website below for information regarding the upcoming flu-season:

Cold or Flu – Let’s try to avoid both!

Here are just a few tips to help you avoid coming in contact with the viruses that show themselves in the common cold and “flu”.

  • Wash your hands – Some viruses can survive on doorknobs, keyboards, desks, pens, books, papers, and other objects. Touch them, then touch your nose or mouth and you’ve got it.
  • Keep your distance – If you know someone has a cold or the “flu”, give him or her plenty of space! The virus is spread through airborne transmission or personal contact. Don’t take a chance of exposing yourself to their germs.
  • Cover all coughs and sneezes with elbows, tissues, or hands and avoid touching your face.
  • Avoid sharing mugs, cups, glasses, or eating utensils. Your friend may not look sick today, but……who knows about tomorrow.
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke. It makes it easier for the virus to invade the lungs.
  • Drink plenty of water – Dehydration invites virus invasion.
  • Eat a well-balanced, healthy diet and get a good night’s sleep!
  • Get a flu shot.
  • Clean surfaces regularly

3rd Grade Vision Requirement

Each 3rd grade child is required by the State of Iowa to have a vision screen. This can be done by an eye doctor; at a doctor’s office; or by Prevent Blindness Iowa, KidSight, Lion’s Club Volunteers. Please send in your vision results if you haven’t done so already.

Allergy Policy

If you have any questions regarding our allergy policy please visit Grant Ragan’s school website and view our elementary handbook. We encourage healthy snacks (fruits/veggies) during snack time. When bringing other food items into the building, please double check the packaging to ensure the ingredient label does NOT state: “May be manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts and tree nuts” or “May contain peanuts/tree nuts”.
Those items brought into a food allergy classroom that say “may contain” or “may be manufactured in a facility that produces peanuts and tree nuts” will be sent home at the discretion of the school nurse.

Feel free to contact the school nurse if you have questions on what items should be brought into the classroom.

Hearing Screenings

Hearing screenings will be conducted in late January. If you have a concern before that

time or don’t want your child screened, please notify the school nurse.

For this fall, the health office is looking for the donations on the following items: girl and boy shoes (sizes for 4th and 5th grade); and ice cream buckets. If you are able to donate, please stop by the health office to drop off the items.
