Giving Tree

The student service leaders will be collecting gifts for Woodland Hills families in need. If you are interested in giving this holiday season, please stop by the front entrance of Woodland Hills Elementary and take a paper ornament off of the Giving Tree. Please follow the instructions located on the ornament.

We will be collecting gifts until December 17. Thank you for helping out those in need during this holiday season!

Friday Music

Does your child take music lessons? Would they like to have an opportunity to practice their skills and showcase their talent in front of a small audience? Well, you’re in luck! We are bringing back “Friday Music” at Woodland Hills!

Students who sign up will have an opportunity to perform from 8:30 am – 8:50 am in the front entrance of our school on selected Fridays. If your child is interested, please email Mrs. Voss at lvoss@waukeeschools.org

Bundle Up For Recess

Students go outside for recess everyday unless the wind chill is 5 degrees or below. Students are not allowed to stay indoors for recess without a medical excuse. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. Hats and gloves are especially important during the winter months. Boots and snow pants are needed when there is snow on the ground. On snowy days, students are required to stay on the blacktop unless they are wearing boots and snow pants. Please remember to label all of your child’s winter clothing.

Inclement Weather Information

Waukee Community School District (WCSD) uses SchoolMessenger to communicate to parents and guardians any weather related late starts, early dismissals, or closures. Messages will be sent via text message, voice message, and email. Parents have to opt-in to receive text messages.

How to opt-in and receive SMS text notifications:

  • Parents, guardians, students, and staff can subscribe by texting “Yes” or “Subscribe” to 67587. The cell phone numbers used must be in PowerSchool to receive a notification.
  • Parents, guardians, students, and staff can unsubscribe at any time by texting “Remove” or “Unsubscribe” to 67587.

  • Opting in does not mean that you will immediately start receiving text messages. It simply means that you have indicated your willingness to receive messages from the SchoolMessenger service. Cell phone numbers must be in PowerSchool to receive a notification from Waukee CSD.

  • If you would like to add a new cell phone number to your contact information in PowerSchool, please contact your building secretary.

Late start and early dismissal announcements will also be made on the local TV and radio stations.

Breakfast is not served on late start mornings. Please make sure your child eats breakfast before arriving to school.

News from the Nurse

Head Lice:

As the cold weather nears, please make sure to send appropriate gear to school (hats, coats, gloves, etc.). With that being said, please also talk with your child/children about the importance of not sharing those items while at school to help prevent the transmission of head lice.

If a case does occur while the student(s) are at school, the Waukee School District follows treatment guidelines for managing head lice developed by the Iowa Department of Education Public Health. Current guidelines state the following: “Children should remain in school for the rest of the day if head lice are detected. Notify parents by phone, provide educational materials on treatment, and review treatment protocols. It is reasonable to expect that treatment be started before the child returns to school the next day.” To keep the incidence of head lice from being transmitted, parents are asked to check all family members for head lice regularly and to treat those found to have live lice or new eggs. If lice are found, parents are asked to notify the school nurse so that the incidence of lice in the school can be monitored and a health alert can be posted on the WCSD health information blog site.
