Waukee Middle School 7th Grade Band Performing Commissioned Song

Update to Dymaxion Project

The Waukee Middle School 7th Grade Band received Best in Class at the Adventureland Festival of Bands. They performed the piece with composer James M. David in attendance. They were also able to present David with the Dymaxion they had built. It was a project the students in this band will never forget. Original Story – February 28, 2022

There’s never been a project quite like this at Waukee Middle School. The school’s 7th grade band, led by Mary Crandell, is working on a commissioned piece this semester.  The “dymaxion” project gives students a chance to invest into a music lesson in a new and unique way. The piece was composed for this group by Dr. James M. David of Colorado State University. The student’s investment will be capped off with the “Premiere” performance at the Adventureland Band Festival in May.

In addition to the performance, students have researched the history of the word “dymaxion” and have spent time learning about the composer’s intent.

The Waukee Middle School Band also had a chance to take a virtual tour of the “Dymaxion,” courtesy of Lane Motor Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.
