Inquiry-Based Investigation in South Middle School Science Classes
South Middle School sixth grade science teacher Sarah Borzo led her students through an inquiry-based investigation on March 27. In groups, students experimented with different chemicals to see which ones combined to form the Mystery Mixture they had observed the day before.
Practicum student leaders visited each group to discuss their approach to the experiment and ask clarifying questions. Students used mini spoons to put two different chemicals into a well and placed ten drops of water into the combination. Students were free to gather data in whatever way suited them, as long as they worked towards concluding which combination was most likely the Mystery Mixture.
