WHS Theatre Arts Presents, The Laramie Project

In October, on the 20th anniversary of the events that inspired the production, Waukee High School Theatre Arts will present THE LARAMIE PROJECT and its epilogue play, THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT focuses on the town of Laramie, Wyoming before Matthew Shepard’s murder and the aftermath that followed. Matthew Shepard was a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming who was kidnapped, beaten, and tied to a fence post because he was gay. The play does not depict the brutal beating and murder of Matthew Shepard, but instead focuses on how the town reacts in the wake of this tragedy. During this time, Moisés Kaufman and Members of Tectonic Theater Project traveled to the town of Laramie six times and conducted more than 200 interviews over the course of a year-and-a-half. The play was constructed from those interviews and is a reflection of the range of reactions to the crime by the citizens of the town.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER is an epilogue play to THE LARAMIE PROJECT. Ten years after the murder of Matthew Shepard, Moisés Kaufman and Members of Tectonic Theater Project returned to Laramie, Wyoming to see how the town has changed as a result of this incident. The play explores how an American town struggles to reconstruct its definition and define its place in history.

Performances of THE LARAMIE PROJECT will take place Thursday, October 4, and Friday, October 5 at 7 p.m. at the Waukee Theatre Arts Center, with an additional matinee performance on Sunday, October 7 at 2 p.m.

THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER will be presented as a staged reading, one night only on Friday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in the Waukee High School Auditorium.

Following each performance of THE LARAMIE PROJECT and THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER, a community talkback will be orchestrated by the company of actors.
