Full-Time Substitutes – Excelling at Predicting the Unpredictable

We’ve all heard the phrase other duties as assigned, but what if your number one job duty are those other duties as assigned?

“I don’t know if I have a typical day anymore,” says Walnut Hills Full-Time Substitute Hannah Ketcham.

Ketcham starts every day at Walnut Hills Elementary, but that’s where the consistency stops. As a full-time substitute teacher, her next stop could be anywhere.

“Sometimes I’m full day in a classroom, sometimes it’s more than one day in a row so I can have consecutive days,” says Ketcham. “I’ve gone from online in the morning to in-person in the afternoon.”

Different classrooms, different students and different teachers. It’s fair to ask, how does Hannah keep everything organized?

“Some classrooms I know everybody. I can tell you their names and their personalities and then they get mad at me if I don’t know who they are in the hallway,” says Ketcham.  “It has been a learning experience to get to know all the classrooms and all the kiddos and to just be able to say hi to everybody in the hallway.”

One things for sure with all students, the connection with their teacher is special. Even if it’s not exactly what we’re used to.

“I was in a 1st grade classroom yesterday as the music teacher, I haven’t subbed in their classroom for their teacher yet,” says Ketcham. “I was in there for music and they were like you were in here for art, you’ve had us in library one day, that’s just really fun to see them in all different kinds of light.”
