Scholarship Awarded to Four Waukee CSD Graduating Students


Carol Dluhos and Edward Vavra have generously endowed Waukee Community School District with funds to provide four scholarships each year to our graduating students.  Beginning in 2022, scholarship funds of $10,000, managed by the Community Foundation of Des Moines, will be awarded to graduating seniors from Waukee High School and Northwest High School. 

Carol Dluhos grew up in Waukee, a descendant of the Shuler miners and a 1946 graduate of Waukee High School. Her husband, Edward Vavra, was born in Cedar Rapids and graduated from McKinley High School in 1947. He served in the Army and Air Force National Guard, graduated from Indiana University with a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, and retired from Principal Financial Group in 1990. 

The inaugural winners of the scholarships are as follows: $2,456 each

    • Area of Study: Accounting
  • Rachel Marwedel, Waukee High School
    • Idaho State University
    • Area of Study: Welding
  • Jace Showalter, Waukee High School
    • University of Iowa
    • Area of Study: Business/Finance
