From Dream Home to Affordable Home
Students in Joe Bormann’s industrial technology class at Waukee High School are competing in the Design Challenge for Affordable Housing as part next month’s annual Affordable Housing Week, April 21-26. The morning of March 11 professional architects from ASK Studio, a Des Moines-based architectural firm visited the class and provided desk critiques and answered questions regarding their projects and the competition.
The students were given the biography of who would be living in the home, where the vacant lot is located, max square footage and limitations on costs. In addition to learning about affordable housing, they are also competing for a $2,000 Scholarship from The Homebuilders Association of Greater Des Moines and two, additional prizes of $500 presented to runners-up.
Other competing schools include Central Campus, Ankeny, Urbandale and Dallas Center Grimes – with a total of approximately 40 participants. A first round of judging will take place next month and the finalists will present to a panel of judges at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 at the Pappajohn Center downtown Des Moines. The public is invited to view all the submissions and attend the live judging.
