Attendance Calling FAQs

Waukee Community School District uses the school notification system SchoolMessenger. SchoolMessenger is a fully-hosted notification platform used to connect parents, students and staff through voice, SMS text, email and social media. Waukee Community school district will be using this system for attendance calls at all of our elementary schools. The families of students whose absences have not been verified with a parent/guardian will receive an automated phone call placed to primary (home) phone and parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool.

At this time, only a few elementary buildings are using this feature.

Why is the school using an automated system for attendance calls?

  • We are hoping this change will serve as an additional safety measure to ensure all students are arriving at school as planned.

Why did I receive a call after I left a message on the attendance line?

  • The families of students whose absences have not been verified with a parent/guardian by 9:30 a.m. will receive an automated phone call placed to the primary (home) phone and parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool. The building secretary may not have been able to get to your message before 9:30 a.m. or your call was made while the automated calls were already in progress.

I received a phone call, but not an email. Is something wrong?

  • No. Parents will not receive an email message. Only phone calls/messages are being sent to the primary (home) phone and parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool.

What number will it call?

  • SchoolMessenger will call the primary (home) phone and parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool.

I only have a cell phone, how will I be notified?

  • The primary (home) phone number listed in PowerSchool does not need to be a landline to receive a notification. These automated calls will also be sent to parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool.

What do I do if I receive an attendance call?

  • Please contact the attendance office of your student’s school at to verify the absence.

Will the system call more than one phone line?

  • Yes, the system will call the students’ primary (home) phone and parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool.

How do I change the phone number that is being called?

  • Parents will receive a phone call to the primary (home) phone and parent/guardian cell phone numbers listed in PowerSchool. If these numbers have changed, please update your records with your building secretary. Please note that this number is used for all SchoolMessenger notifications. Changes to this phone number will also affect how you are contacted regarding messages about inclement weather and school emergencies.
