You’re Invited: Vince Meyer Learning Center Rededication August 24

Waukee Community School District will host a rededication ceremony for the Vince Meyer Learning Center on August 24. The ceremony is being held in correlation with Waukee Fest and will start promptly at 12:30 and last about 30 minutes. Students, parents and community members are invited to help us celebrate the reopening of this historic building.

Approximately 92 fifth graders from Waukee Elementary will attend the newly-renovated Vince Meyer Learning Center. The Board approved the schematic design and improvements to the 1917 facility at the September 10, 2012 Board of Education meeting. These improvements included new windows (respecting the architectural integrity of the existing building), an elevator, new lockers and some minor HVAC adjustments.

On Oct. 22, 2012 the Waukee Board of Education approved the renaming of the 1917 facility to Vince Meyer Learning Center. The district chose the name in recognition of Vince Meyer’s decades of service and commitment to the Waukee community and students. One of Meyer’s most important contributions was his service to the United States. He was a commissioned officer who reached the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Air Force and was a veteran of World War II. Meyer was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his work as a bombardier on a B-17.

The reopening of this building will provide additional space for students at Waukee Elementary School where student enrollment for grades Pre-K-4 has increased to approximately 621 students.

Following the event, participants are encouraged to attend the Waukee Community Center Ribbon Cutting which will start at 1:15 p.m.  For a full schedule of Waukee Fest events, click here.
