Record Season for WHS Large Group Speech Team
Congratulations Waukee Speech Teams! On February 8 Waukee High School Speech Teams set a new school record earning 15 Division I ratings at the State Large Group Speech Competition held at Ankeny High School.
Groups earning Division I ratings included: Choral Reading, Comedy Wax Museum, One Act Play, Don’t U Luv Me?; Ensemble, Love Bound; Musical Theatre, Sweet Charity; Musical Theatre, Spamalot; Musical Theatre, Avenue Q; Short Film, Loss; Group Mime, Little Match Girl; TV NEWS, KWEN at 10; 9th Grade Radio, News Spark 1120; Radio, 108.8 Happy State; Radio, Pi 3014; 9th Grade Group Mime, The Journey of the Robber; Group Mime, The Proposal and Readers Theatre, The Insanity of Mary Girard.
On February 10 the following groups were named “Outstanding” and nominated for the All-State Festival to be held at ISU on February 22: Group Mime, The Little Match Girl; TV News, KWEN at 10; Short Film, Loss; Readers Theatre, Insanity of Mary Girard; Musical Theatre, Spamalot; Musical Theatre, Avenue Q and Musical Theatre, Sweet Charity.
Students sign up to participate in Speech Team and are placed into an event that best suits their talents and schedules. Groups work, rehearse and meet once or twice weekly from November to February. This year 140 students signed up to participate and were divided into 27 groups.
It takes a crew to put together successful teams. Seven coaches, Jacki Pleggenkuhle, Brian Christensen, Chelsea Haaland, Sarah Zdenek, Terri Peterson, Becky Scholes and Jeff Rohrick, worked with the groups to help prepare them for competitions. The hard work paid off, with 21 groups advancing to the state competition.
The individual speech event season is just beginning with upcoming contests on March 1 and March 15. Individual speech events are more related to giving speeches. Some of the categories include Poetry, Prose, Acting, Storytelling, Reviewing and Public Address.
