Waukee High School’s mock trial team qualified for the Iowa State Bar Association’s State Tournament. The 9-member squad defeated Johnston’s team March 11 to advance to the elite tournament. Earning a pair of perfect “10” scores, senior Cait Spackman led the team and received an Outstanding Witness award from both mock trial judges. Competing at the Iowa Events Center, eight area teams advanced from the field of 29 teams in the Des Moines regional.

Mock trial allows Waukee students to take on the roles of attorneys and witnesses in presenting a case. This year’s criminal case dealt with cyberstalking and harassment. Participants include freshmen Michael Adato and Felipe Leguizamo, sophomore Chase Van Langen, juniors Rashida Anderson and Emily Mai, and seniors Carter Kemmet, Kanchi Rekha, Alex Smolik and Cait Spackman. More than 30 high school students started participating in the program at the beginning of October. The team is coached by Jean Gross and Kent Peterson.

The state tournament will take place┬áMarch 26 – 28 culminating with the state finals in the Iowa Judicial Building in downtown Des Moines.
