Dr. Dave Wilkerson Recipient of Iowa Bandmasters’ Outstanding Superintendent Award

The Iowa Bandmasters Association presented Dr. Dave Wilkerson of Waukee Community Schools the Outstanding Superintendent Award during the Iowa Bandmasters convention banquet at the Marriott hotel on May 15.

Each year members have the opportunity to nominate deserving administrators whose leadership and support have helped create exemplary band programs.

“I’m proud of the comprehensive programming we are able to offer all our students in the areas of academics, arts and athletics. Our instrumental faculty have worked together to create one of the best instrumental music programs in the state.” Wilkerson said. “As school budgets continue to tighten, we can’t waiver in our support for related arts programs that provide more opportunities for students to grow, create, innovate and be successful.”

Band director Josh Deutmeyer nominated Wilkerson on behalf of the entire Waukee band staff.

“He supports band and is proud of the program,” Deutmeyer said. “He has also provided funds annually to purchase needed instruments and has allowed band staff the opportunity to have input on facility designs in new buildings.”

Wilkerson has been an administrator in the rapidly growing Waukee Community School District for 21 years. During this time the instrumental program has grown with the District. Eight band staff positions have been added in the last 11 years, further demonstrating Wilkerson’s support of the program.

“As an administrator one of Wilkerson’s greatest strengths is his ability to encourage conversations with instrumental music staff and be present, whether it’s in the classroom or at concerts and contests,” Deutmeyer said.

Awards were also presented to Thomas Novotney of Lincoln Intermediate School and Heather McKay of Atlantic High School. Novotney received the The Outstanding Elementary/Middle School Principal Award and McKay received the Outstanding High School Principal Award.
