A Message From Mr. Robie
Welcome to year two at Grant Ragan! We are off to a great start! In the year’s first newsletter, I want to share our building goals with you, and describe the Responsive Classroom approach that teachers are learning about and implementing at Grant Ragan.
Our first two building goals are academic goals around the area of reading. Our building leadership team wrote two goals in an effort to better encompass K-5 students, not just those who take standardized tests.
- During the 2017/18 school year, the percentage of students who are proficient will increase as measured by fall to spring FAST data.
- The percentage of students who meet their MAP reading growth target will increase from spring 2017 to spring 2018.
Our behavior goal is centered around the implementation of a Responsive Classroom approach, which our staff made the decision to pursue in the spring of last year.
- Staff will implement chosen Responsive Classroom components with fidelity as measured by teacher survey data.
Responsive Classroom is a way of teaching that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe school community. Six guiding principals outline the Responsive Classroom approach:
- Teaching social and emotional skills is as important as teaching academic content.
- How we teach is as important as what we teach.
- Great cognitive growth occurs through social interaction.
- What we know and believe about our students—individually, culturally, developmentally—informs our expectations, reactions, and attitudes about those students.
- How we work together as adults to create a safe, joyful, and inclusive school environment is as important as our individual contribution or competence.
- Partnering with families—knowing them and valuing their contributions—is as important as knowing the children we teach.

Grant Ragan’s Picture Day is scheduled for Friday, September 8th.

Early Dismissal on Wednesday, September 6th
Students will be dismissed at 1:40 pm on Wednesday, September 6th.

September Grant Ragan Restaurant Night – September 12th at Z’Mariks
Join us at Z’Mariks in Clive on Tuesday, September 12th between 4 and 9 pm. Please mention Grant Ragan Elementary and 50% of sales for dine in and carryout will go towards our school!
Grant Ragan Striders Program
On September 6th we will be kicking off another year of Striders at Grant Ragan Elementary! The Striders is a program where all grade levels are encouraged to run/walk during recess on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (weather permitting). For each 1/4 mile lap completed, participants receive a punch on their card. For every five miles completed the participant will receive a token. On April 24th, 2018, those participants that have completed a 1/2 marathon or a full marathon will be invited to participate in the Grand Blue Miles Iowa Kidstrong Fun Run (free). 1st PTO MEETING – Tuesday Sept. 12th, 7pm in the Grant Ragan Library
We will be hearing from Mr. Robie and Mr. Wendt and introducing our PTO plans for the year. NEW this year, we are offering babysitting for those families that need childcare in order to attend the PTO Meetings. Hope to see you there!
Required kindergarten paperwork is to be turned into the health office no later than October 30th, 2017. If the correct paperwork has not been turned into the health office within the next couple of week’s parents will be receiving a note from the health office stating that their child is not up to date on the following paperwork: immunizations, physical forms, lead level forms, dental screenings, and vision screenings. If you have questions on why you received the letter, don’t hesitate to call the main office @ 987.2767 and ask for the school nurse. For those parents that have already turned in the correct paperwork, thanks so much!
Please remember that we have students in the school that may have a life-threatening allergy. If you have any questions regarding our allergy policy please visit Grant Ragan’s school website and view our elementary handbook.
We encourage healthy snacks (fruits/veggies) during snack time. When bringing other food items into the building, please double check the packaging to ensure the ingredient label does NOT state: “May be manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts and tree nuts” or “May contain peanuts/tree nuts”.
Those items brought into a food allergy classroom that say “may contain” or “may be manufactured in a facility that produces peanuts and tree nuts” will be sent home at the discretion of the school nurse.
We encourage ordering treats from our Waukee Nutrition Dept. as those treats are peanut/tree nut free. Feel free to contact the school nurse if you have questions on what items should be brought into the classroom for snacks/treats.

For the upcoming school year, please review the tips below:
*Keep your child home for at least 24 hours when he or she is sick. This means your child must be fever free without medication (Temperature of 99.9 and below), and not vomiting for 24 hours before coming back to class (school policy).
*Take children into the doctor as soon as possible if they are showing flu-like symptoms.
Hearing screenings will occur during the 2017-2018 school year by AEA. If you have a nurse.concern before that time or don’t want your child screened, please notify the school
For this fall, the health office is looking for donations on the following items: girl AND boy shorts (size 6-12) and jeans/leggings/warm up pants (sizes 5-12). If you are able to donate, please stop by the health office to drop off the items. As well, the health office is looking for donations of kleenex, hand sanitizer, and empty ice cream buckets.
Please feel free to stop by the health office if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child.
Important RAPTOR/VISITOR Information
The Waukee Community School District upgraded our Raptor Visitor System over the summer. All parents and visitors will need to have their IDs scanned prior to visiting or volunteering in the school. Even those who have had their ID scanned at Grant Ragan last year will need to have their ID scanned again this year.
- All visitors over the age of 18 are required to have an ID on them while in the building
- Parents/Visitors may have their ID added to the Raptor System on weekdays from 8:00am-4:00pm in the front office
- We strongly advice having your ID scanned prior to the Fall Harvest Party on October 26th
