New Raptor System for Visitors – Important!

The Waukee Community School District upgraded our Raptor Visitor System over the summer. All parents and visitors will need to have their IDs scanned prior to visiting or volunteering in the school. Even those who have had their ID scanned at Grant Ragan last year will need to have their ID scanned again this year.

  • All visitors over the age of 18 are required to have an ID on them while in the building
  • Parents/Visitors may have their ID added to the Raptor System on weekdays from 8:00am-4:00pm in the front office
  • We strongly advise having your ID scanned prior to the Fall Harvest Party on October 26th

Picture Retake Day: Friday, October 20th

  • Original photo packages must be returned to the LifeTouch photographer on retake day.

Storybook Pumpkin Patch

Calling all creative Grant Ragan readers! We would love to create our storybook pumpkin patch in our library again this year and we need your help.  Students can decorate a pumpkin that represents their favorite book and bring it to the library to be displayed throughout the month of October.  Pumpkins can be dropped in the library beginning Monday, October 2 and will be on display until Thursday, October 26.  Any pumpkins not picked up by the end of the day October 26 will be disposed of.  Participation is voluntary. Bullying Prevention and Awareness Month

Winter Warmth Drive

It is getting to be that time of year where we go through our closets in search of winter gear for the quickly approaching winter months. We dig out our coats, hats, mittens, and boots from last winter to see if everything still fits your children. If the things you find do not fit anyone in your family, please consider donating the winter gear to Grant Ragan’s Winter Warmth Drive. From October 23rd to November 2nd, we will be collecting gently used winter gear to donate to several agencies in the metro area.  Some of the agencies the donations will be given to are Freedom for Youth, Serve Our Youth, Hawthorn Hill, and Youth Emergency Services and Shelter. There will be a box in the main hallway at Grant Ragan for students to put their donations. Thank you for thinking of those in need as winter approaches.

Waukee Invitational 3rd-7th Grade Mile Run

All third through seventh grade students in the Waukee School District are invited to participate in the Annual Waukee Invitational Mile run on October 2 at Eason Elementary School – 605 SE Boone Drive – Waukee.

All runners will receive a finisher ribbon and medals will be awarded to top place-winners of each grade level. A traveling trophy will be awarded to the elementary school with the highest 5 finishers!
Parents are responsible for getting runners to and from the event and are encouraged to park at the Robert Brownell Sports Complex across from Eason Elementary. Runners should bring a water bottle. Questions may be directed to the mile run coordinator, Missy Brush, at 987-5161 ext. 4505.
Runners must be registered for the event. The entry fee is $3.00 per runner and registration is open through September 29.  Races by grades and times along with direct online registration links are listed below. Rain date is October 3.

Attendance/Transportation Change Reminder

  • Please notify your child’s teacher and the front office by 9:00am if your child will be absent from school.

PTO Meeting – Tuesday Oct 2nd, 7pm

Please join us as we hear from Cindi McDonald, Waukee Superintendent of Schools, on the bond referendum and updates on our school district. Val Jansonius (Grant Ragan Instructional Coach), Hope Bleckwehl and Jodi Simons (Grant Ragan School Counselors) will be presenting on the Responsive Classroom approach being used at Grant Ragan this year.  FREE babysitting is provided during the meeting! Save the Date for the Grant Ragan Movie Night – Friday Oct 20th from 6:30-9

Grant Ragan will have their first Movie Night in the Grant Ragan Gym. We will enjoy the movie Smurfs: The Lost Village. Please bring your blankets/lawn chairs. Popcorn and water will be provided. There is no cost to attend this event. We hope to see you there!

Nurse Notes

For the upcoming school year, please review the tips below:

*Keep your child home for at least 24 hours when he or she is sick. This

means your child must be fever free without medication (Temperature of 99.9 and below), and not vomiting for 24 hours before coming back to class (school policy).

*Take children into the doctor as soon as possible if they are showing flu-

Kindergarten Requirements

Friendly reminder, please turn all required kindergarten health paperwork in to the health office no later than October 30th, 2017. If the correct paperwork has not been turned in by this date, your child will be excluded from school. If you have questions on what needs to be turned in or need copies of the health forms don’t hesitate to call the the health office 987.2767.

3rd Grade Vision Requirement

Each 3rd grade child is required by the State of Iowa to have a vision screen. This can be done by an eye doctor; at a doctor’s office; or by Prevent Blindness Iowa, KidSight, Lion’s Club Volunteers. Reminder letters will be sent home by the end of September if I haven’t received a vision screen by that time.

Allergy Policy

If you have any questions regarding our allergy policy please visit Grant Ragan’s school website and view our elementary handbook. We encourage healthy snacks (fruits/veggies) during snack time. When bringing other food items into the building, please double check the packaging to ensure the ingredient label does NOT state: “May be manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts and tree nuts” or “May contain peanuts/tree nuts”.

Those items brought into a food allergy classroom that say “may contain” or “may be manufactured in a facility that produces peanuts and tree nuts” will be sent home at the discretion of the school nurse.

Feel free to contact the school nurse if you have questions on what items should be brought into the classroom.

Hearing Screenings

Hearing screenings will be conducted in late January. If you have a concern before that time or don’t want your child screened, please notify the school nurse.


For this fall, the health office is looking for the donations on the following items: girl AND boy shorts and pants/sweatpants/leggings (sizes 6); girl and boy shoes (sizes for 4th and 5th grade); and ice cream buckets. If you are able to donate, please stop by the health office to drop off the items.

Please feel free to stop by the health office if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child.

National School Lunch Week

  • National School Lunch week is Monday, October 9th-Friday, October 13th
  • Parents are invited to join their children for hot lunch on Wednesday, October 11th
  • Please RSVP to your child’s classroom teacher if you would like to attend.
  • Adult lunches cost $3.60
  • Parents can use their child’s account to pay for their lunch or they may bring exact change.
  • All visitors are required to have their IDs when visiting the school.
