Weather Guidelines for Recess

Remember that students go outside for recess if the windchill is above 0 degrees.  Please send winter wear, labeled with your child’s name.  If you need assistance in providing winter wear for your child(ren), please contact one of our counselors at or  We can help!

Parent PowerSchool Portal FAQ’s

Student progress reports will be posted to PowerSchool at 4pm on Friday, November 10th.

If you have not set up a PowerSchool account yet, you will need to create one by following these instructions.

  • You will need to present a photo ID to the Grant Ragan front office to receive your child’s access ID and password for the first time.

If you need to add a child onto your existing account, you can do so by following these instructions.

If you are receiving this message: “You are unable to access your account at this time. Please contact your school directly for assistance.” 

  • Your account is most likely disabled due to outstanding fees. Accounts are disabled due to outstanding registration fees, textbook fees, or a negative lunch account balance. You may take care of those fees by logging onto RevTrak. Please allow 24 hours for your payment to process before attempting to access your powerschool account again.

Forgotten username or password:

  • You may have your password reset by visiting the front office at Grant Ragan or by using the “Having Trouble Signing in?” link on the Portal Home Page.

If you are able to log in to your account, but do not see your child’s grades:

  • Once you log in to your account, select the “standard grades” tab at the top of the page. Then click the “expand all” button in the top right corner of the screen. Your child’s progress grades should then drop down from each section listed.

Important Reminder for Changing Your Child’s Dismissal Plans

  • If your child normally rides the bus, but you plan to pick them up that day (or vice versa) it is imperative that you notify the front office.
    • You may leave a message on the attendance line (515-987-2737), call the front office directly (515-987-0435), or email the front office (
    • We understand plans often change at the last minute; Please notify the school of any transportation/dismissal changes prior to 3:00pm when possible.
  • For safety reasons, we must send students home according to the dismissal information listed in PowerSchool unless we hear otherwise directly from the child’s parents.
  • The same rule applies for students who normally attend Beyond the Bell or other day cares.
  • Please contact the front office (515-987-0435) if you need to permanently change your child’s dismissal information in PowerSchool.

The Giving Tree

The season of giving is soon upon us.  We will be collecting gifts for Grant Ragan families.  If you are interested in giving this holiday season, please stop by the front hallway at Grant Ragan Elementary and pull an ornament off of the Giving Tree.  Then simply follow the instructions located on the ornament and bring the gift back to school. The Giving Tree will be up by November 11th and parents can stop by during conferences.  We will be collecting gifts until December 15th.  Thank you for helping out those in need during this holiday season.

It’s Food Drive Time!

IT’S FOOD DRIVE TIME! November 1st will be the kick-off for the annual Waukee Foundation Scholarships food drive.  You have until Friday Nov. 17th to bring your goods into your school.  Every year the students of the Waukee School District are great contributors and supporters of this program for the Waukee Food Pantry.  Last year we raised over 12,000 lbs. of good and over $3,000 in cash!  We are striving to beat those numbers! Help us reach our goal by helping the families that need us! Grant Ragan is assigned to have families donate protein items such as canned tuna, canned chicken, beans,  peanut butter and nuts. Other food donations will be accepted as well. Cash donations can be made by writing a check made out to Waukee Christian Services and given to the schools or by donating via Revtrak HERE.

Thank you so much for supporting this cause for our community.

Staff Appreciation – Thank you!

Thank you for all of your donations to the Staff Appreciation gifts.  These were gifted to our Grant Ragan staff this week as a way to show our appreciation for all the work they do for our kids. Thank You for helping us show our appreciation to our teachers!

Grant Ragan 2017 Wild West Book Fair

The Wild West Scholastic Book Fair will soon be coming to Grant Ragan.  The book fair is open various times (listed below). Did you know that 50% of all Book Fair sales are returned in Scholastic Dollars to the Grant Ragan school library for the purchase of new books and supplies. Last year’s Book Fair helped the Grant Ragan library grow by approximately 700 books!

The book fair schedule is as follows:

Head Lice

As the cold weather nears, please make sure to send appropriate gear to school (hats, coats, gloves, etc.). With that being said, please also talk with your child/children about the importance of not sharing those items while at school to help prevent the transmission of head lice.

If a case does occur while the student(s) are at school, the Waukee School District follows treatment guidelines for managing head lice developed by the Iowa Department of Education Public Health. Current guidelines state the following: “Children should remain in school for the rest of the day if head lice are detected. Notify parents by phone, provide educational materials on treatment, and review treatment protocols. It is reasonable to expect that treatment be started before the child returns to school the next day.” To keep the incidence of head lice from being transmitted, parents are asked to check all family members for head lice regularly and to treat those found to have live lice or new eggs. If lice are found, parents are asked to notify the school nurse so that the incidence of lice in the school can be monitored and a health alert can be posted on the WCSD health information blog site. If you have questions about the district’s Head Lice guidelines or need assistance in the treatment of lice, please contact your School Nurse. Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.

For the upcoming school year, please review the tips below:

Keep your child home for at least 24 hours when he or she is sick. This means your child must be fever free without medication (Temperature of 99.9 and below), and not vomiting for 24 hours before coming back to class (school policy).

Take children into the doctor as soon as possible if they are showing flu- like symptoms. Please visit the website below for information regarding the upcoming flu-season:

3rd Grade Vision Requirement

Each 3rd grade child is required by the State of Iowa to have a vision screen. This can be done by an eye doctor; at a doctor’s office; or by Prevent Blindness Iowa, KidSight, Lion’s Club Volunteers. If you are unsure that you turned this paperwork in, please call the the health office.

Allergy Policy

If you have any questions regarding our allergy policy please visit Grant Ragan’s school website and view our elementary handbook. We encourage healthy snacks (fruits/veggies) during snack time. When bringing other food items into the building, please double check the packaging to ensure the ingredient label does NOT state: “May be manufactured in a facility that also processes peanuts and tree nuts” or “May contain peanuts/tree nuts”.

Those items brought into a food allergy classroom that say “may contain” or “may be manufactured in a facility that produces peanuts and tree nuts” will be sent home at the discretion of the school nurse.

Feel free to contact the school nurse if you have questions on what items should be brought into the classroom.

Hearing Screenings

Hearing screenings will be conducted in late January. If you have a concern before that

time or don’t want your child screened, please notify the school nurse.


For the winter, the health office is looking for the donations on the following items: boy underwear (SIZE 6, 7, 8); girl and boy shoes (sizes for 4th and 5th grade); and ice cream buckets. If you are able to donate, please stop by the health office to drop off the items.

Attendance/Transportation Reminder

  • Please notify your child’s teacher and the front office by 9:00am if your child will be absent from school.

Students will be dismissed at 1:40pm on Wednesday, November 15th.
