Warriors Win Fifth Boys Golf Title
The Waukee High School (WHS) Boys’ Golf team captured the 2018 Class 4A State Golf Championship Saturday, October 6, at Brown Deer Golf Course in Coralville. It was the school’s fifth state championship in Boys Golf having also won in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015. Weather played a part in this year’s tournament as the second day of the tournament was canceled because of rain and poor course conditions.
WHS won the meet by jumping out to a commanding lead after day one. Led by Griffin Parker’s three under par 68 and Michael Vicente’s one over par round of 72, Warrior’s team score of 289 (+5) put them 7 shots ahead of the field. Bennett Pedersen shot 74 and Jack Starr’s 75 rounded out the WHS scoring. All four scoring golfers placed in the top 23 of the 84 player field. Team members Josh Nichols and Charlie Steer played but their scores did not figure into the team total.
The boys’ victory continues an impressive run of success in golf for the school. The 2018 trophy is the 14th state championship trophy won by WHS. The girls have won five state titles and WHS has won the CoEd State title four times.
