The next decade will be important and challenging for the District as it works to accommodate rapid growth. As a mom with two children in Waukee schools, I want to be a part of this process, helping to guide decisions that will impact students for many years to come. I’ve been involved with Waukee schools since 2006, serving on the 2012-13 Boundary Committee; the 2013 Secondary Study Committee; as Brookview PTO Vice-President and Staff Appreciation Chair; and as District PTO Secretary. I work part-time as a Missions Assistant at Lutheran Church of Hope and my faith is an essential part of who I am.

My wife JoAnna and I have two daughters attending Waukee Schools – entering 7th and 9th grade. I have been the owner and optometrist at Elite Eye Care since opening the practice in 2010. I served on the 2013 Secondary Study Committee, and have volunteered for and/or supported the Waukee School Foundation, Waukee Band Boosters, Waukee Athletic Boosters, Maple Grove PTO, as well as many other teams, events, and clubs at the elementary, middle, and high schools. We have an exceptional school district with extraordinary teachers, principals, and administrators. I am running for school board to be a part of the process as Waukee Schools continue to grow, yet maintains its excellence in educating and preparing our students.

My wife Janice and I have three children, Brendan, Alyssa and Patrick that have all attended Waukee Schools. I am a Certified Financial Planner™ with HJN Advisors and have more than 20 years of professional experience in the financial services field. I have served on various boards, most recently as Waukee Band Booster President, where I started Celebration in Brass at Waukee held in July that attracts close to 3,000 spectators. I wanted to become a school board member because I feel every child deserves the opportunity to succeed in school and we can accomplish this by providing a world-class education where each student has a chance to discover, and develop, his/her passion for learning and success.

Together, my husband Larry and our three sons have made the Waukee community our home for the past 21 years. I have been an educator for over 25 years, with a BA from the University of Northern Iowa, MA from Viterbo University, and Certificate in Reading Recovery Teacher Training from the University of Northern Iowa. I enjoy kids, gardening, and mowing. We are members at Lutheran Church of Hope. I have dedicated most of my professional career to education and believe in working together to meet the diverse social, emotional and programming needs of our students. As a board, we must advocate to ensure that cuts in state funding don’t negatively affect those needs while remaining fiscally responsible to taxpayers for a world-class education. It is vital to continue to retain, recruit, prepare great educators, make schools safe places for students and work in collaboration with the community to embrace change with the addition of our new high school. I enjoy a challenge and am confident that our community will embrace our joint efforts to lead these changes.

I was raised in Gowrie, Iowa (Webster County) where I attended Prairie Community Schools (now Southeast Valley/Prairie Valley).  In 1983, I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a BA in Elementary Education.  Being the first member of my family to earn a college degree was a celebration for our entire family as education was always a priority for my parents.  After graduation, I accepted my first teaching position in Orange City, Iowa.  In 1985 I moved to Cedar Falls and taught in La Porte City (now Union CSD).  While attending graduate school I taught in Dike (now Dike-New Hartford) for five years. After completing my MA in Educational Administration from the University of Northern Iowa I accepted my first administrative position in Central City, Iowa and then served for 7 years in the Aplington-Parkersburg District before coming to Waukee as elementary principal at Brookview.  Prior to completing my 5th year as Associate Superintendent for Waukee, I served as the Director of Elementary Education for the Cedar Falls Schools.  I am married to Mike and blessed with two daughters.  Kelsey is a senior at Iowa State University graduating in May 2017 and Erin is a sophomore at Waukee High School.   I am honored to serve the district as the incoming Superintendent and am committed to continued excellence!
